Wolverines Ruin Buckeyes' Stadium Dedication

If anything could possibly be sweeter than dedicating your own stadium with a win over your despised archrival, it would be spoiling that rival's dedication of its own stadium. Which is exactly what the Wolverines did on this glorious day in Columbus, to the tune of 19 to 0. If ever there were a poisoned egg to be presented to whatever acquaintances you may have among the Ohio State alumni (we know you have no friends among them), this would be it. Just wait until they put it up on their walls, and then let some other Michigan alum ''just happen' to remember the score of the game.

1925 Michigan, 10; Ohio State, 0
At Michigan, Another Day, Another Shutout,Only one lousy field goal by Northwestern marred an otherwise perfect year for this Wolverine eleven, as every other game ended with a Michigan shutout. This calcimining of the Buckeyes at the old Ferry Field was the sixth whitewash out of a total of seven that the Champions of the West dealt out to their opponents.
1927 Michigan, 21; Ohio State, 0
Dedication Of Michigan Stadium, Brand new stadium, same old result: a thumping of archrival Ohio State. As perfect a combination as you could ever ask for in Ann Arbor.

At Ohio State, Ohio State? Just One More Victim, Other than a scoreless deadlock with an uncharacteristically strong Michigan State entry, the Wolverines raced through their schedule without a blemish, including this calcimine job down in Columbus. At the end of the year only Knute Rockne's Notre Dame eleven could boast of anything better.
1932 Michigan, 14; Ohio State, 0
At Ohio State, Champs Again, Everything else in the country seemed to hit rock bottom that year, but at least Michigan fans had the consolation of seeing the Wolverines back on top of the heap, after a perfect season that included a skunking of their heated rivals from Columbus.
1934 Ohio State, 34; Michigan, 0
At Ohio State, Some Handshake, The Wolverines probably wished that the Buckeyes had taken this handshake a little more to heart in this one. About the only bright spot for Michigan that year was the stalwart play of their all-Big Ten center, a long-forgotten man named Gerald Ford.

At Ohio State, Terrific James Thurber Program Cover, James Thurber's dogs could often be seen running around the Ohio State campus, and every damn one of them played keepaway with the football from the Wolverines during the mid-1930's. This was the only football program cover that Thurber ever drew, and it's a classic.
1938 Michigan, 18; Ohio State, 0
At Ohio State, Back To Normal, After an inexplicable four year stretch where the Maize and Blue couldn't buy a point, let alone a win, against the Buckeyes, things returned to normal in 1938, with an easy 18-0 Wolverine win in Columbus. Great cover illustration by Ohio State's Frederick Machetanz.
1945 Michigan, 7; Ohio State, 3
At Michigan, Both Michigan and Ohio State had to take a back seat to the surprising Indiana Hoosiers that year, but at least the Wolverines could console themselves by winning the only game that really counts.

At Michigan, On The Way To Perfection, This walloping of Ohio State provided a fitting climax to a perfect regular season for the Wolverines, who then went on to torture Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl by a count of 49 to 0---the same score by which they had beaten Stanford in the first Rose Bowl, way back in 1902.
1949 Michigan, 7; Ohio State, 7
At Michigan, Two Yards And A Big Cloud Of Dust, The Wolverines had a chance at the Rose Bowl if they'd beaten the Buckeyes in their season finale, but after 60 minutes of futile line plunges by both sides, Ohio State backed into the Big Ten title by holding the Maize and Blue to a draw.
1950 Michigan, 9; Ohio State, 3
At Ohio State, "We're Here, And We're Not Coming Back Next Week" That was Michigan AD Fritz Crisler's reaction to a suggestion that a mere Columbus blizzard should postpone a Michigan-Ohio State game. So what if the temperature was 10, the wind was blowing 40 MPH, and the field was so covered with snow as to be all but unplayable? This wasn't Miami and Hawaii, folks, this was Michigan and Ohio State! And so the legend of the "Blizzard Bowl" was born. And with 50,503 paying customers (out of 82,300 ticketholders) braving the elements, the Wolverines parlayed two blocked punts into a safety and a touchdown, while FIFTEEN Chuck Ortmann coffin corner punts pinned the Buckeyes inside their own 15 yard line all afternoon. It wasn't the most elegant of victories, but as a result of it, the Wolverines wound up in the Rose Bowl (where they beat California) and the Buckeyes wound up with a new coach. Some guy named Woody.

At Michigan, Not A Bad Consolation Prize, This turned out to be newcomer Michigan State's year in the now-once again Big Ten, but ending the season with a whooping of Ohio State wasn't too bad of a consolation prize for the Wolverines.
1954 Ohio State, 21; Michigan, 7
At Ohio State, Wouldn't you know it, just when Michigan State came down to earth after three years worth of domination, Woody Hayes's Buckeyes arrived with their best team ever, leaving Michigan a bridesmaid once again. The Wolverines gave it a fight but the Buckeyes' depth wore them down in the fourth quarter.
1955 Ohio State, 17; Michigan, 0
At Michigan, Please Omit Flowers, Michigan's hopes for a Big Ten crown ended rather ignonimously with this home loss to Ohio State, as All-American Hopalong Cassidy and a bonecrunching Buckeye defense spelled doomed for the Wolverines. It was a disappointing finish to a season that had seen them at the top of the polls for the first six weeks of their schedule.
